Style Guide: The Best New Beauty Tips For A New Year, And A New Improved You!

Beauty trends change as quickly as fashion, which means a constant flow of new tips, tricks, styles and products for your hair, skin, nails, make-up and everything in between. It's exhausting to keep up with everything, and it seems as though just when you finally nail a look- it becomes so last season!

Well, I've come to the rescue my beauties, and have put together this simple and concise list of the best new beauty tips, makeup looks, and skincare tricks to focus on for this fresh new year, and a new and improved you!

Hair Care: The Sleek Blowout

Volume is out, and sleek and straight is in! Forget big curls and teasing as well as any other volume-building techniques, which tend to only cause major hair damage. We're focusing on healthy, happy hair. And yes, while blowdrying and flat ironing your hair sleek and straight does involve some heat, if you use the appropriate heat protection products and stick to styling only 2-3 times a week you will be good to go!

I am currently obsessed with Bumble and Bumble's 'Repair Blow Dry' serum-creme that works wonders especially if your hair is already slightly damaged. I personally only wash and style every two days or so, relying on dry shampoo and top knots in between.

Now, if you have natural curls or frizzy hair you may be thinking that this new hair style is absolutely out. But hold on girlfriend - I found this great article over on Style Caster -> "Get It Straight: The Curly Girl's Guide To A Non-Damaging Blowout"which is a good read even if you have naturally stick-straight hair like me! The overall theme here is take care of your hair so that it is both stylish and healthy.

Skin Care: Serums Are In - Lotions Are Out

This is my number one beauty tip for glowing skin! Wave goodbye to thick skin lotions, and say hello to serums.

The newest formulas are not only lighter on your skin, but they are also surprisingly much more nourishing and hydrating. The science behind it is actually quite simple - in a serum most of the filler fluids like petrolatum or mineral oil are excluded leaving you with a much more concentrated version of the active ingredients.

And while they tend to be a bit pricier than your average lotion, when applied properly serums can actually last you much longer. A tiny amount goes a long way, so in the end you actually end up saving money and your skin! I have found hyaluronic acid-based serums to work wonders for my dryness and fine lines, but every one is different so make it your resolution this year to find that ideal product that works best for your skin.

Hair Care: Mask More Than Just Your Face

Let's vow to make this the year that we make your hair healthy again! If you didn't know, now you know that masks are certainly not only for your face. And lord knows we need them with the amount of coloring, styling, pulling, parting and curling our poor strands go through on a daily basis. So do yourself a favor today, and make a point to give your hair this intense level of conditioning at least once a month if not more often.

There are countless masks on the market at varying price points, so it's just a case of finding the one that best suit your hair type. You will also notice there are some which tell you to use daily and some which ask you to leave in for 15 minutes versus 1 or 2 minutes. So again, shop around and pick one that you can easily incorporate into your current routine.

Makeup Looks: Go Bold

Last year we gave you beauty tips on how to master the natural makeup look, but this year we are going BOLD!

Makeup looks change by the season (for some of us by the day), and this year we want you to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new for your daily makeup color and style.

While Jessie has clearly perfected the smoky eye + red lip look below, I suggest you start with just one and build your way up. Because while I am a huge proponent of going bold, I also think there is a fine line to keep your look refined. Trial and error is half the fun here and who knows you may just find your new signature style.
